The Blooded are cursed to carry magic in their blood - when their blood is spilled, the magic comes out, whether to heal, summon or destroy. They are hunted by the Church of the Angels, whose Black Monks hunt them through the nights and the slums to deliver them to the Angels.

After Jered's Initiation ceremony suffers an unexpected development, Jered is involved in a frantic chase across the city.

Meanwhile, back in the Cathedral, the Master must explain the situation to a displeased superior.
